A hydraulic gear pump is a type of positive displacement pump that uses the meshing of gears to pump fluid. It is one of the most common types of pumps for hydraulic fluid power applications. The gear pump was invented around 1600 by Johannes Kepler.
There are two basic designs of gear pump: external and internal. An external gear pump consists of two identical, interlocking gears supported by separate shafts.
