A hydraulic gear pump is a type of positive displacement pump that uses the meshing of gears to pump fluid. It is one of the most common types of pumps for hydraulic fluid power applications. The gear pump was invented around 1600 by Johannes Kepler.

There are two basic designs of gear pump: external and internal. An external gear pump consists of two identical, interlocking gears supported by separate shafts. Generally, one gear is driven by a motor and this drives the other gear (the idler). The gears rotate in opposite directions, and as they do, they form a series of chambers that fill with fluid as they rotate past the inlet port. As the gears continue to rotate, the chambers are sealed off and the fluid is displaced to the outlet port.

An internal gear pump operates on the same principle but the two interlocking gears are of different sizes with one rotating inside the other. The smaller gear is driven by a motor, and as it rotates, it meshes with the teeth of the larger gear. This creates a series of chambers that fill with fluid as they rotate past the inlet port. As the gears continue to rotate, the chambers are sealed off and the fluid is displaced to the outlet port.

Hydraulic gear pumps are commonly used for pumping high viscosity fluids such as oil, paints, resins or foodstuffs. They are also used in a variety of other applications, such as power steering systems, braking systems, and machine tools.

Here are some of the advantages of hydraulic gear pumps:

  • They are simple and reliable.
  • They have a long lifespan.
  • They are relatively inexpensive.
  • They can be used with a wide variety of fluids.

Here are some of the disadvantages of hydraulic gear pumps:

  • They can be noisy.
  • They can be inefficient at low flow rates.
  • They can be sensitive to contamination.

Overall, hydraulic gear pumps are a versatile and reliable type of pump that is well-suited for a variety of applications.
